Finding the best telescopic ladder for your purpose can be a little overwhelming, there are so many to chose from. I have scoured what is available in terms of telescopic ladders and have put my findings into an easy to navigate top list for you.

Let me just clarify something that might save you some confusion down the line when being confronted with conflicting product reviews.

Telescopic ladders can sometimes get a bad name and reputation because people use them incorrectly, hurt themselves and then leave the product a terrible review..

The telescopic folding feature is not a magic trick where you press a button when the ladder is vertical and allow it to come crashing down all at once.. that is a recipe for disaster and trapped fingers and hands, believe me!

The proper and safe way to fold a telescopic ladder is to do it slowly and carefully, section by section. Follow the manufacturers guidelines and if in doubt, type your ladder name into Google and watch a video of someone folding down your exact ladder.

A Telescopic Ladder is a great invention and perfect for the modern and often small, family home. They are ideal for trade work as they are adjustable to suit a variety of needs and projects.

If you don’t want to buy a ladder for one job and then have to struggle to find a place to store it or have to look at it wedged in your garage or shed everyday, a telescopic ladder may be perfect for you. Telescopic ladders are incredibly easy to store.

Check out our top picks:

1. Finether 3.2m / 5m Aluminium Telescopic / Telescoping Loft Extension Ladder

Finether 3.8M Aluminum Telescopic/Telescoping Loft Extension Ladder

The Finether telescopic ladder is the perfect first ladder, it comes in a variety of maximum heights and is light in weight. The free gloves and storage case are an added bonus, the case especially, as this helps to protect the ladder when in storage, increasing the longevity of use.

For the purpose of this review, we will talk about the 3.8m ladder that we tested. The measurements and sizes given are based on this particular ladder so if you go for the slightly smaller or larger version then the measurements will differ slightly.

The size when fully retracted is 84 cm high, which will free up valuable space in your garage or shed! It can even be stored safely away in that pokey cupboard under the stairs.

The Finether 5m ladder has a maximum weight limit of 150kg so is very strong.

The size can be adjusted in 1ft increments which is ideal for any tight jobs that require a specific height setting. You can work at smaller heights of 33 inches all the way up to 12.5ft for higher up jobs.

Its ability to work at specific heights in 1FT increments makes it ideal as a loft ladder if you don’t want to invest in the high cost of having a specific one installed.

Pros:

  • Constructed of durable aluminum alloy.
  • Easy to use, quick to set up and down.
  • Free work gloves and case included.
  • Folds very small for storage or for transporting.
  • EN131 certified.
  • A huge 150kg weight limit.

Cons:

  •  Not suitable for trade or professional use.

This telescopic ladder features anti-pinch finger protection (many ladders will pinch fingers when they are closed up).

It also has a great safety feature that shows when rungs are safely engaged (so you don’t accidentally not engage them causing the ladder to collapse).

This ladder is safe for light commercial use, so is good for tradesmen who require one for the odd job here and there (it shouldn’t be used all day every day for continuous use as a tradesperson ideally).

It is made from lightweight aluminium and heavy duty PVC for the side components.

Pros:

  • Built to GPSD & EN131-1, EN131-2, EN131-3 standards.
  • Incredibly lightweight 9kg.
  • Easy and quick to set up an use.
  • Well known and reputable manufacturer.
  • Very affordable.

4. Multi Purpose 3.8m Telescopic Ladder

3.8m telescopic ladder

This is an entry-level telescopic ladder.

This is ideal for those who don’t see themselves requiring the use of a telescopic ladder regularly and don’t want to spend an unnecessary fortune.

It is one of the cheapest telescopic ladders on the market, but this doesn’t mean you settle for poor quality!

Pro’s:

  • Can be used from 83cm high up to the 3.8m maximum length.
  • Easy to fold down and store away
  • Features rubber feet to help grip uneven outdoor surfaces and protect precious indoor flooring

5. Homdox Telescopic Ladder A-Frame 5m

WORHAN® 5m (16' 4'') Double Telescopic Ladder

The Homdox Telescopic Ladder is an ideal all rounder. With this ladder there is no need to invest in a set of steps or step ladder, this telescopic ladder can cover all bases and is suitable for a huge variety of jobs.

Safe and sturdy, this ladder can also extended to 5m but is slightly cheaper than the Worhan branded ladder. Its folded size is also only 93cm heigh. Meaning that is still very compact and manageable for transporting.

  •  EN131 and CE approved.
  • Cheaper than other 5m telescopic ladders.
  • Light weight and sturdy.
  • Made of T5 aluminum.

The latter is available in 5 different heights – 2m,2.6m, 2.9m, 3.2m and 3.8m – ideal for those who may not be after a ladder that extends beyond 3m for general jobs around the home and garden.

This ladder is very affordable, the smallest size is just over £50 and the largest just under £100.

The Nestling telescopic ladder has clicking buttons that produce an audible click to let you know it is locked safely in position.

Whilst not suitable for daily long term use by a tradesperson (someone requiring constant ladder use could do with a traditional solid metal ladder, more suited for heavy duty projects.

Pro’s:

  • 150kg weight limit
  • Easy and quick to fold down using buttons
  • Very affordable price
  • Suitable for light trade use
  • Very light (differs dependant on size)

Con’s:

  • Not the greatest quality ladder – but you really can’t grumble too much when it is so cheap.
  • There really aren’t any other cons – if you fold the ladder down incorrectly, you will put yourself in danger. Follow the instructions!

What is a Telescopic Ladder?

Telescopic ladders are a fantastic invention – a ladder that can extend to a very large height but can be stored in a very small space once collapsed.

The ladder collapses inside itself (exactly like an old fashioned telescope). Telescopic ladders are thankfully now available to buy everywhere.

They were once considered quite a luxury item but the prices have really come down on them as they are produced in larger quantities and by more manufacturers.

Telescopic Ladders were first seen in the car boots of surveyors – especially those who were well dressed and drove a fancy car. They would pluck the ladder out of their boot and extend it to access almost any point of a house as part of the survey. This is something you still see today!

Benefits of Telescopic vs a Conventional ladder:

  • Much easier to store – storing a telescopic ladder is easy, but if you have a 5m long ladder that will not fold down or become any smaller, keeping that somewhere hidden will be almost impossible! Conventional ladders have to be left outside unless you have a massive garage or shed in which to store them. This can cause them to deteriorate much faster and is simply not practical.
  • More uses – if you require a ladder to access different heights on your home (for roof, windows, loft etc) then you will need more than one ladder. You can use a 5m long conventional ladder to clean out the guttering but using that to get into the loft would be impossible! A telescopic ladder is adjustable to suit the need of the project.
  • Lightweight and compact – Carrying a telescopic ladder won’t result in some kind of comedy routine like trying to carry a larger conventional ladder! In fact, a telescopic ladder can be carried in and out of the home and anywhere in one hand! A conventional ladder will bash, crash and smash into things and you have to be really careful when moving it around.

Telescopic Ladder Brands:

  • Finether – A manufacturer of homewares, kitchen, garden and DIY products sold all over the world.
  • Worhan – a German manufacturuer of high quality ladders.
  • Charles Bentley – a huge UK based company founded in 1860 that sells a large variety of garden products.

Classes/Certification of Telescopic Ladders:

  • BS2037/BS1129 Class 1 – For heavy duty and industrial use – If you are needing a ladder that is incredibly strong and going to be used every day at work, this is the class for you. If you need a ladder just to use at home, there is no sense in investing in such a robust class. If working on a building side, this may be the one for you. Examples such as these. You will be hard pushed to find a telescopic ladder that is Class 1 certified. The heavy use means that is just doesn’t suit the needs.
  • EN131 – For trade and light industrial use – This is the class to go for as it means the ladder conforms to a standard that is suitable for light industrial and trade use. By getting one of these ladders to use in the home, you know you are investing in something that is high quality as it can be used in a trade environment.
  • BS2037/BS1129 Class 3 – For domestic use only. This class was withdrawn in November 2017 and no longer applies to ladders. This was a tightening of health and safety regulations to avoid too many accidents on ladders. Class 3 ladders had to be reclassified as EN131, if they don’t meet the requirements of EN131, they can no longer be sold.

Is a Telescopic Ladder Right For Me?

There are a number of different styles of ladders available on the market now, to suit a variety of needs.

The first thing to consider is whether your ladder is going to be used for light duties around the home, like accessing a loft or to help with decorating. Or if you need a ladder which is suitable trade and business uses.

If your needs are for general use and a variety of jobs, a Telescopic may be best in terms of:

  • Being easy to store and transport
  • They are fairly lightweight and manageable
  • They have good solid feet that can be stabilised on many different surfaces.
  • To lean against any wall or surface such as a loft hatch or gutter.
  • The larger telescopic ladders can also fold in half – the become an A-frame free standing ladder.

A tripod ladder is a really useful tool to have in the garden if you have tall trees or hedges that need to be maintained.

The tripod structure allows you to get such closer to the object you are trying to reach, when there isn’t a wall to lean against.

If you are trying to cut a hedge, the third leg of the tripod ladder creates a very stable structure for you for work comfortably at height, even on uneven surfaces.

Countless times I have tried to balance at the top of a step ladder trying to trim the top of the garden hedge, which is really strenuous and very dangerous. A tripod ladder solves this problem and although quite a costly investment, will last a lifetime and save me from struggling to balance on a regular ladder.

Read on to discover which tripod ladders I found to be the best in terms of functionality, ease of use and price. This post will save you from spending hours of flitting between products trying to compare features.

1. BPS Access Solutions Tripod Ladder

Tripod ladder for cutting and trimming trees or hedges. Ladder to get higher and closer to the object.

An excellent 7 step tripod ladder for gardening and general use.

This is one of the more affordable tripod ladders on the market.

Probably a good one to look at if you are literally buying the tripod ladder just to trim the garden hedges trice a year.

The base of the BPS ladder is 1.05m wide, which is much wider than a regular ladder, this provides a much more stable frame for working at height.

Deep Ladder Rungs

I like the deeper than average ladder rungs.

On this ladder they are 3 inches deep, whereas most ladder rungs are only 1.5 – 2 inches deep. The extra depth allows more space for your feet to stand on, so if you are working on the ladder for long periods of time, there won’t be as much strain on your feet and legs, you can stand more safely and comfortably.

Narrow Top For Using Bulky Tools

The top portion of this tripod ladder tapers to much narrower top, this is a useful feature, because if you are using tools at the top of the ladder, the ladder won’t get in the way of you moving the tool around to cut branches.

One of the reasons this ladder is cheaper than some of the others available is that the third leg is not height adjustable, there is only one height which makes it a little more awkward to set the ladder up if the ground is uneven. This isn’t a major downfall and won’t have an impact for most people though, but if you have a very hilly garden, you may benefit from getting a tripod ladder with an adjustable third leg.
The third leg also has a spike on this ladder, so that it can get a good grip on grass and muddy areas. If you wanted to use the tripod ladder on paving or decking though for example, there is a rubber foot included with this ladder that caps off the spike, making the third leg and regular flat foot so as not to damage surfaces.

 Pros
  •  2.93m high with 10 steps.
  • Constructed from industrial strength aluminium.
  • Free interchangeable non slip rubber foot for safe use on hard surfaces, such as patios.
  • Aluminium construction means it is weather proof and will not rust.
  • Foot spike which secures the ladder even on uneven grass surfaces.
  • Chain and hook to secure ladder in a folded position for storage.
  • Rubber feet included – usually sold separately.
  • More affordable than other tripod ladders available.
  • Deep rungs – 3 inches.
 Cons
  • Only one height available
  • Individual feet are not adjustable to accommodate different ground levels.
  • No side handle bars to hold onto.

Size and Weight

Open Height: 2.93m

Width at base: 1.05m

Weight: 12kg

2. Henchman Tripod Ladder with 3 Adjustable Legs

Henchman Platform 3 Leg Adjustable Tripod Ladders Steps Orchard Fruit pickingThe Henchman ladder is available in four sizes from 1.8m to a 4.8m.

You could save some money by buying a ladder which suits your specific requirements. A height that can fulfil your needs and not one that is too big.

This is a very high quality ladder that is a little more costly than other tripod ladders due to having more features.

All 3 Legs Adjustable Height

The Henchman ladder makes working on difficult outdoor jobs much easier as you can face the job head on (sooner than working sideways.)

You can do this because all three legs of the ladder are adjustable.

The adjustable legs mean you can find a stable level to work at even on very uneven ground.

Being able to face the job and work head on is both more comfortable and safer as you have more stability and less tension in your muscles to keep yourself stable.

7 Inch Platform At the Top

I really like the platform at the top of this ladder, it is a 7 inch deep platform that allows you to comfortably place both feet on the top step without having to balance on a standard rung.

It is horrible to work at the top of a ladder and be constantly trying to stabilise yourself and you balance, this platform really helps with this. Especially as tripod ladders narrow as they reach the top, which means there is less framework to stand on.

Handrails Either Side For Easier Climbing

Another feature I really likes about this tripod ladder is the simple addition of a handrail on either side of the ladder.

The hand rails are separate to the ladder rungs which help you to climb the steep steps in a more natural way.

(It also helps when coming back down the ladder!)

A tripod ladder isn’t like a regular ladder where the rung widths are the same width the whole way up which makes it harder to hold on and to climb the ladder.

The hand rails make you feel much more stable and safe when climbing up and down the ladder – they are also good for holding on to when working with one hand.

 Pros
  • Available in 4 different heights, to suit your specific needs.
  • Three adjustable legs (with 460mm / 18” of movement on each) this means you can secure the ladder even on uneven terrain.
  •  7″ deep platform at the top for your sure footing and comfort when standing & working at the top of the ladder.
  • Manufactured under ISO 9001-2000 conditions.
  • Maximum weight for working load is 150kg.
 Cons
  • More expensive than regular ladders.
  • Wide bottom means it is more awkward to store.

Size and Weight:

Sizes available are: 1.8m (6ft), 2.4m (8ft), 3m (10ft) or 3.7m (12ft).

Weight varies for each height of tripod ladder.

See Price on Amazon

3. ‘Ladders-Online’ Trade Tripod Ladder

Ladders-Online Trade 1.8m (5.91ft) Standard - Garden Hedge Cutting Tripod Ladder - Lightweight aluminium frame, double rung treads

This is another great ladder for being able to reach up high to cut hedges, trees or to pick fruit.

Third Leg is Telescopic

The third leg of this ladder is telescopic, so you can find a good level to work at.

This is ideal if you want to position the ladder somewhere where there is a different ground level, the two feet can be placed at one level and the third leg can be placed on a higher or lower surface by adjusting the height.

The ‘ladders online’ ladder has extremely wide feet at the bottom for extra support.

Double Bar Platform On Each Step

Each rung of the ladder has a double bar platform, which means there is more of a step to stand on to help you stay balanced.

(This makes it much easier to stand on for long periods of time.)

The working load for this ladder is 100kg, which is lower than some tripod ladders. (This ladder has a lightweight body.)

There isn’t a platform at the top of this ladder, like there is with the Henchman tripod ladder. This is one of the reasons that this ladder is cheaper than other tripod ladders. It is still comfortable to stand at the top of the ladder however, thanks to the double rungs.

 Pros
  •  Lightweight aluminium frame, double rung treads.
  • Available in four sizes from 1.2m to 3.6m high.
  • Third leg is telescopic so it can be adjusted for uneven ground.
  • Feet are clawed for extra grip.
  • Rubber caps can be placed over the clawed feet to protect surfaces.
  • Hand rail at the top for extra stability.
  • Wide bottom feet.
 Cons
  •  Rubber feet are not included, they are for use on hard surfaces such as decking that you do not want to scratch.
  • Awkward to store and transport due to wide bottom legs.
  • No large platform at the top to stand on.

Size and Weight:

Height: 3.6m

Width: 1.45m

Weight: 12.1kg

4. Henchman Tripod Garden Ladder with Built-In Platform

Tripod Garden Ladders with built-in Platform by Henchman - 1.8m.

This is a great tripod ladder from Henchman.

The shoulder working height when standing on this ladder is 2.22 metres and the waist working height is 1.8m, so it is perfect for hedge, bush and tree cutting, (or fruit picking!)

This Henchman model is designed for ease of use and comfort.

Easy To Balance On The Platform

I really like the built in platform which makes it much easier to balance and not strain your back or legs when working on the ladder.

Third Leg Adjustable For Uneven Ground

The third leg is adjustable, which makes it a much more practical ladder to use in all areas.

The feet of the ladder are also clawed to prevent sudden slips or sinking.

The feet can be used on solid surfaces with the addition of rubber feet. (These are sold separately are not expensive.)

This Henchman is slightly cheaper than some of the other models, considering everything that is included, it is a really good price.

 Pros
  • Built in platform on the third step. Makes it very comfortable to stand for longer periods of time without having to balance.
  • The third leg is adjustable, so you can achieve a steady level, even on uneven surfaces.
  • It is not too big or bulky – some of the tripod ladders are absolutely huge, this is a much more manageable size.
  • The poles either side are wide for easy grip and support.
  • This is a really lightweight tripod ladder, easy for transporting and storing. It is only 7.1kg.
 Cons
    •  Rubber feet are not included, they are for use on hard surfaces such as decking that you do not want to scratch.
    • Only one leg is adjustable.

Size and Weight:

Height: 1.8m

Width: 100cm

Weight: 7.1kg

These are the four best tripod ladders I discovered whist looking for the best tripod ladder for my garden. I wanted to use it to cut the hedges that formed a perimeter around my house and was tired of balancing on a regular stepladder.

Why tripod ladder is best for the garden?

To be perfectly honest, each tripod ladder has its minor differences and special features. Although essentially, they are all very similar.

Cheapest Tripod Ladder

If you are looking for the cheapest tripod ladder, the ‘BPS Access Solutions’ ladder is the most affordable and will get the job done every time.

Henchman Platform 3 Leg Adjustable Tripod Ladders Steps Orchard Fruit picking

Best Tripod Ladder Overall

The tripod ladder that I chose as the best and chose to purchase was the ‘Henchman 3 Adjustable Leg Ladder.’

It has been fantastic.
It did cost more money than the others in this post, however with the extra features, like the long handlebars, top platform and the fact that all of the legs are adjustable made it worthwhile for me.

I have completed a lot of jobs with this ladder over the last year, including cleaning out the gutters, trimming the hedges outside the house and I’ve also used it when cleaning the plastic roof of the sunroom with the pressure washer.

Is It Worth Investing In a Tripod Ladder?

The difficulty with those jobs before was that I never really felt safe on a ladder that had to lean up a wall or object. I was always worried about losing my balance or the ladder falling backward.

The benefit of a tripod ladder is that you are free standing and can position the ladder anywhere where there is ground.

I always preferred standing on a step ladder to a regular ladder, it feels more secure and grounded.

(When you stand on a tripod ladder, you get this feeling of evenly distributed weight and stability.)

I would say that yes, if you can afford it, and regularly have a do jobs outside in the garden that require a freestanding ladder then you will benefit from a tripod ladder enormously.

I chose the Henchman tripod ladder mainly because of the standing platform area at the top of the ladder and also because of the adjustable legs.

This is the easiest way to feel much more stable is to change one for two of the leg heights to get the ladder firmly planted on the ground in way that makes the foot platform parallel to the ground.

One of the other great features about the Henchman tripod is the fact that is has the highest working weight. This ladder can cope with holding a weight of 150kg, (23.6 stone) which would allow most people to stand on the ladder using tools at the same time.

I hope this guide was useful or helpful to you! If you have any questions about tripod ladder, leave a comment and I will do my best to answer it!

If working at height isn’t worrying enough, working with electricity at height is an even greater cause for concern.

The threat of electrocution is an occupational hazard of an electrician, so it is smart to take as many precautions as possible.

Metal and aluminium ladders are definite no-no’s; they reactor as electrical conductors.

Instead, the best ladders for electricians are made from timber, or, most often, fibreglass.

They offer insulation to the user in the event of contact with live wires and high voltages.

Sterk Systems 5 Tread Fibreglass Step Ladder

The 5-tread step ladder from Sterk Systems is made from heavy-duty fibreglass, is robust enough for trade use while remaining portable enough for home use.

It features non-conductive, insulated side rails that withstand up to 30000 volts.  The steps are wide and serrated for additional grip; the rubber feet provide excellent non-slip grounding.

Our favourite feature is the tool and gadget tray at the top of the step ladders. Although not strong enough to stand on, it creates the ideal spot to keep equipment close by, saving time and energy.

The ladders fold flat for simple storage; opening takes seconds. There are external side-spreaders that lock into place for added sturdiness.

When closed, they are 160cm long and fit into the back of most vans. They weigh just over 8kg making them portable enough to transport between jobs.

You might be surprised to learn that they have a maximum weight capacity of 150kg, and when opened the top step is 130cm from the ground. This is a more than adequate height for undertaking ceiling work.

This robust and lightweight stepladder not only keeps you safe from shocks, but the rubber treads and plastic feet keep the ladder locked firmly into position during use.

Pros

  • Heavy-duty fibreglass construction
  • Insulted rails (30000v)
  • For trade or domestic use
  • Lightweight and incredibly robust
  • Anti-slip treads
  • Top cap holds a large tool tray

Cons

  • The top cap only bears 25kg

Youngman 6 Tread Catwalk S400 Fibreglass Platform Step Ladder

The 6-step ladder from Youngman is made from fibreglass and is non-conductive to 30,000v. It is lightweight yet robust so suits heavy-duty trade use.

It is also a handy set to have around the house as it provides a safe standing platform to reach ceilings and first flooring guttering and windows.

Our favourite feature is the top handrail. Many electrician’s ladders consist of a locking A-frame but provide nowhere to grip when on the highest rungs.

The sturdy handle makes even the most nervous user feel safe.

It folds relatively flat and stands at 2.3m when closed. When it’s open, the platform is 1.37m high, providing a working height of approximately 2.9m.

The top tray is the ideal storage space for tools.

Everything about the ladder is designed with safety in mind including wide tread spacing and slip-resistant feet help. The strong braces that lock on either side for supreme rigidity and stability.

The Youngman ladder has a maximum load weight of 150kg, so will bear a substantial person and any necessary equipment. Not only is it safe for electrical works but its working height makes hedge trimming, hanging Christmas lights, or cleaning out the gutters, an absolute cinch.

Excel Fibreglass Folding Hop Up Platform

Any experienced electrician will tell you that their ladders need to be lightweight and portable, not cumbersome and awkward.

Hop-Up ladders fit the bill; they weigh very little and provide stable footing when working at height.

The Generic model is a fine example; made from GRP fibreglass, it offers insulation from shocks. They are easy enough to pick up and move around with ease, perfect for the electrician testing an entire house.

One hop up and you are on the platform. It is generously sized at 60cm x 30cm. The platform is 48cm from the ground, the perfect height for fuse board work.

Our favourite thing about the Hop Up is its versatility. Because they are so portable, they are easy to move from job to job, both in and outdoors. They are a decorators dream, enabling them to reach ceiling height with ease.

There are 2 ladders included for the affordable price, both of which have a spring-loaded folding mechanism for simple, flat storage. They are compact enough to fit in the boot of the smallest car.

The fibreglass construction ensures its longevity; they are robust, durable, and most of all, safe.

Pros

  • 2 included
  • Extremely portable
  • Plenty of platform space
  • 150kg maximum load
  • compact, folding design
  • good value for money

Cons

  • Only 1 height setting

Werner 7170818 Fibreglass Platform Stepladder 8 Tread

If you’re a professional tradesperson and on the lookout for a substantial set of ladders, this Werner set worthy of serious consideration.

They are made from fibreglass for superior non-conductive protection, the handrails feature 7-layers for added protection, and to increase their weather resistance.

Each tread is deep and has an etched non-slip design which, along with the EDGE moulded brace and footpad, add strength and durability to the step ladder.

The highest working platform is 1.87m from the ground, achieving an approximate safe working height of 3.62m.

Surprisingly, for such robust ladders, they weigh just 16kg but have a maximum weight capacity of 150kg.

Our favourite feature is the Holster Top storage tray at the top of the ladder. Not only does it have space to store a paint pot, coffee mug, and other necessary equipment, there are also recesses to sit tools and brushes in. Anything that limits the number of trips up and down a ladder has to be a big bonus.

The versatile Werner ladder is perfect for electricians due to its excellent insulation properties. It is also hard-wearing and durable enough for multiple trades with rigorous use. The manufacturers have such belief in their product that they backed it with a 25-year guarantee.

Pros

  • 8-treads for increased reach
  • heavy-duty, weather-resistant fibreglass construction
  • Hard-wearing, durable
  • Holster Top tool storage stay
  • Moulded EDGE design increases stability and strength
  • Easy to fold down flat for storage

Cons

  • Too tall for small vehicles (unless with a roof or side rack)

TUSCANIA Folding Ladder With 5 Steps

Like us, you had probably never thought of a ladder as a thing of beauty – think again. The Arredamenti 5-step ladder is beautifully designed and constructed, making it very easy on the eye.

When not in use it doesn’t need to be leant against anything to store; it is free-standing. If space is at a premium, the ladders blend well with any décor, almost as if they were an extra piece of furniture.

The ladders weigh around 11kg, they aren’t heavy but the caster wheels at the base make transporting them around a very simple task.

They reach 182cm when open and the highest working level stands at 109cm above the ground.

The locking mechanism provides extra stability; it smoothly locks the braces into position without fear of pinching or trapping fingers. Twisting the same mechanism releases the ladders to put away. It gives the user greater protection from fear of collapse.

Our favourite feature is the safety handrail. It is removable, extendable, and provides additional stability, even when the user is working at the top step. The rail is metal, and not advisable to use when undertaking electrical work – however, the rubber grip at the top would act as an insulator.

The Tuscania ladder is incredibly robust, providing the user with a sense of safety at all working heights. It is hard-wearing and durable, it will last for a lifetime.

Pros

  • Solid cherry wood construction – natural insulation
  • Extending handrail
  • Caster wheels for easy transfer
  • Stand-alone storage
  • A platform for tools and pots
  • Beautifully engineered
  • 120kg maximum weight capacity

Cons

  • Awkward to open and close at first
  • Heavier than fibreglass models

What to look for in the best ladder for electricians

Many factors influence which is the most suitable ladder for your needs; these are some of the most obvious features to look out for

Construction

The safest materials for an electricians ladder are fibreglass and wood. Unlike metal and aluminium, they don’t conduct electricity, instead, they are insulators and keep the user protected.

Fibreglass –  they provide superior strength and stability while remaining lightweight and easy to transport. Fibreglass is non-corrosive, doesn’t rust nor easily dent.

They are ideal for outdoor work as they won’t weaken over time if exposed to damp conditions or sunlight.

Fibreglass does not conduct electricity; it provides insulation and gives the users protection from electrocution.

Even if there are small aluminium elements to a mostly fibreglass ladder, the user will remain safe as long as the ladders are cared for correctly.

The fibreglass serves to break the circuit, so there is nowhere for the live current to travel.

Timber – Wood is another non-conductor but less frequently used by electricians, probably because they are bulkier and heavier.

It is harder to keep wood clean and dry, especially when working outside. Once wet or dirty, even wood might conduct some level of electricity, so beware.

Size

Ensure the ladders are the correct height for the job; if you’re unsure, go bigger. It is safer to have a taller ladder and reach than a shorter ladder and overreach.

Consider the available storage space and whether you will need to transport the ladder in a vehicle.

Remember;  platform height = how high the highest step/platform is from the ground

working height  = how high an average-size person will reach from the                                 highest platform

Platform and step size are also important; they increase stability and comfort.

Weight

The weight of the electrician’s ladder needs to be manageable; wiring runs great distances so so must the tradesperson. Heavier ladders often have caster wheels for easier transfer.

Never exceed the maximum load capacity of a ladder as it comprises the user’s safety.

The weight of the person isn’t the only consideration, think of the power tools, paint pots, and other equipment.

Safety

Some fibreglass ladders feature levelling feet for a sturdy grip on uneven ground.

Hand and side rails offer additional safety, as do non-slip feet and treads.

Always use ladders as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Are fibreglass ladders always safe for electrical use?

Even fibreglass is capable of transmitting electric shocks from the most powerful sources. The best way to avoid this is not to give the current anywhere to go; keep the ladders clean and dry.

Work at a safe clearance from overhead power cables and maintain 3-points of contact at all times.

Conclusion

The ladders featured in our reviews are of varying size and design; their common denominator is that they are the safe ladders for electricians.

If you observe ladder safety rules at all times, beware of overhanging, exposed wires, and keep the ladder clean and dry, then you should have a reliable piece of equipment to use safely for many years.

There are few better places to store ‘stuff’ that you can’t bear to get rid of, than in the loft.

Most lofts are spacious areas, and unlike sheds and garages, keep your belongings safe and dry.

If you’re going to need frequent access to the loft, the most convenient, safe way to do so is by installing a set of loft ladders.

The best loft ladders store discreetly inside the loft hatch and pulls down quickly to make the top floor of a home easily accessible.

Youngman 301001 Telescopic Loft Ladder

If you have a drop-down loft hatch then the Youngman loft ladders are worthy of serious consideration. Their compact design ensures that they fit in the smallest of loft entrances, but not at the expense of the step-width. Each of the treads measures 12-inches wide providing plenty of sure-foot surface for all sizes of feet.

The loft ladders have a small footprint. When they are inside the attic space their profile height is just 8-inches.

They are constructed from anodised aluminum, a tough and durable metal that is relatively light. The ladders weigh less than 13kg yet are capable of safely bearing loads of up to 150kg.

It is possible for one person to install the loft ladder, although time and effort are reduced if 2 people carry out the task. The instruction leaflet could be clearer; we find that following YouTube installation videos clarify each step much better than written directions. The mounting kit is supplied, open the box and start the job.

They are adjustable telescopic ladders that have 3 lockable lengths;

  • 217 – 261cm
  • 243 – 288cm
  • 273 – 320cm

There  is an extending aluminium rod with a hooked end for the user to slot into a loop and pull the ladders down. As they slide towards the ground they emit a series of clicks as each section locks into place. Rubber feet on the legs not only steady the ladder, but they also prevent any damage to floor coverings.

The ladders retract just as easily. There is a red release button at either side of the second step. Once pressed, they push back into the loft where they lock back into position.

The Youngman loft ladders are high-quality, sturdy, and safe. They are simple to operate; even when space is at a premium.

Pros

  • High-quality, well designed
  • Adjustable to 3-different lengths
  • Wide treads for safety and comfort
  • Ideal for small loft hatches
  • Mounting kit supplied

Cons

  • Instructions could be clearer
  • Only compatible with downward opening hatches

Deluxe Wooden Loft Ladder with Twin Handrails

Very few loft ladders come with handrails for additional safety. The deluxe wooden loft ladder does, and it makes a world of difference. Situated at the top of the ladder in the final third section, the red handles take the effort and stress out of stepping off the ladders and into the loft.

They are made from high-quality timber that complements any landing space without looking metallic or garish.

The ladder is of tri-fold construction, is delivered fully assembled and ready for installation.

Unlike similar models, it is pre-attached to a loft hatch. The user needs to replace the existing door with the new one by following the instructions and guidance videos.

The door is double-sprung and counter balanced. Not only does this take the effort out of sliding the ladders up and down, but it also ensures the loft hatch stays locked into place securely.

It is of high-quality construction. It is 36mm thick and has rubber seals to prevent any heat loss. There is also architrave supplied to make a neat finish around the hatch.

Little loft space is swallowed up by the ladders with this innovative design.

The ladders feel incredibly strong and sturdy and have a weight limit of a generous 150kg. The treads are wide and deep but if you’re worrying about foot room on the top section due to its proximity to the loft door, don’t. It is possible to affix the final tier further away from the hatch for additional toe space.

The deluxe loft ladders are so easy, quiet, and safe to use, so much so that it can be done one-handed.

With a life-time guarantee, it is difficult to find a reason not to buy them!

Pros

  • Superior quality timber construction
  • Supplied fully-assembled with loft door
  • Twin safety handrails
  • Up to 2.8m height fittings
  • Lifetime guarantee
  • 150kg weight rating

Cons

  • Available in 3 frame sizes; loft hatch may need enlarging
  • The foot design is for carpet, it may mark wood or laminate

Telesteps 60324 Mini Telescopic Loft Ladder

If you’re looking for some lightweight loft ladders for use in a restricted space, these could well be the model for you. Unlike similar styles, the Telesteps loft ladder doesn’t take up needed loft space, instead it stores neatly within the ceiling space.

Made from aluminium, Telesteps have designed a telescopic retraction system that works similarly to a domino effect. Once the ladders are securely installed, the user simply has to pull the length of webbing and watch each step drop in sequence, locking into the previous one as it goes. The slick mechanism ensures the loft ladders open quietly and smoothly.

When they are settled into the floor, a quick peek beneath each step should show a small red clip that guarantees full automated locking of the system has occurred.

The tubular frame makes for a comfortable grip as you mount the ladder; the deep, wide tread ensures safety and comfort.

It has a maximum load-bearing weight of 150kg, ensuring almost everyone has easy loft access.

As seems to be the issue with lots of loft ladder brands, the installation instructions are a little vague. Telesteps have produced a video on their website which make the job much easier. With 2-people working on the installation, it is much less time consuming and relatively easy. Most of the assembly is done prior to assembly.

They are very sturdy loft ladders that are compatible with very small loft openings. Ensure you have all of your measurements correct before ordering as these mini, compact ladders fit a definitive area. Larger models are available.

Their modern silver design and robust construction offer many years of service while freeing up the maximum amount of storage space.

Pros

  • Compact, space-saving
  • Effortless operation
  • Automatic let-down and locking system
  • Compatible with 2350mm – 2450mm ceiling heights
  • Safe, sturdy, and secure

Cons

  • The spring is hard to connect, wear protective gloves
  • Vague written instructions

BPS Access Solutions Unique 2.74m Concertina Loft Ladder

Not all loft accesses are generously sized, which is where the BPS concertina loft ladder steps in.

It is designed to fit in small and awkward spaces, taking up little loft space as it does.

When stored away, it sits snugly within the hatches perimeter, with just 4cm profile standing proud.

Enclosed within the system is a conversion kit to transform a push-up hatch into the drop-down style required. All of the components are included, although some ultra-strong carriage bolts are a worthwhile addition.

Installation is best with 2-people, one to bear the weight as the other aligns the fittings and attaches them. The instructions are in English but, as seems to be the problem with all of our featured loft ladders, they aren’t very clear.

YouTube is rife with handy videos and step-by-step installation videos.

The ladder is double spring-loaded, this supports its weight as it is lowered and raised. A handy rod is included to pull the steps down; the extra hook is an alternative option, it has to be securely screwed into the tip of the rod.

Choose the most comfortable gradient for you and rest the ladder there. If the ladder seems too long it is simple to undo and remove 1 of the 10 steps.

Each step has a soft rubber coating. Not only does it increase comfort levels, but it also grips the foot to improve safety.

Similarly the base has rubberized wheels. We love how these protect all types of floor coverings.

The BPS loft ladders are very strong and durable. The large aluminium treads are capable of withstanding 150kg weight, that is equivalent 23.5-stones.

They are a perfect set of loft ladders for difficult spots and small loft hatches, easy to operate and install.

Pros

  • Lifetime Guarantee
  • Compatible with small loft hatches
  • Space-saving design
  • Hatch opening conversion kit supplied
  • Rubber anti-slip treads
  • Strong and durable

Cons

  • Poor installation instructions
  • It is quite large in the hatchway; may prevent storing very large items

Teenza 2.9M Telescopic Ladders

The final review of the best loft ladders is something a little different. The Teenza ladder is portable, it can be used for accessing loft space and is useful for a multitude of other indoor or outdoor tasks.

It is made from aluminum which keep its overall weight down to around 9kg.  It is a deceptive ladder; despite it’s lightweight it has a weight rating of 150kg.

When fully extended it has 10-steps and reaches 2.9m; folded to its shortest it stands at just 74cm tall.

Because of this, the Teenza is storable in many places; the garage, a kitchen cupboard, it even slides beneath a bed unnoticed!

The ladder sets at many heights. It’s telescopic design allows each step section to pull out individually and lock into place. There is an audible click to alert you to the lock, but  there is also an added safety feature of a pair of locking clips to put your mind at ease.

For maximum safety, there are a pair of fixed hooks at the top of the ladder. When hooked over a ledge, they increase stability, as does the balance bar at the base of the ladder. Rubber feet also help to keep the ladder secure.

This lightweight ladder is very strong and versatile. It  stores anywhere and usable for jobs around the house; inside and out.

If you’re an infrequent visitor to the loft, then it seems futile spending time and money on a fitted set of ladders when the Teenza will do the job, and a million other beside.

Pros

  • No assembly or installation required
  • Lightweight, portable, and versatile
  • Extends from 0.75cm – 2.9m and anywhere in between
  • Very strong and durable
  • Easily extends and retracts

Cons

  • The retraction action pinches fingers if they’re not kept away
  • Not a permanent fixture as a loft ladder

Features of the best loft ladders

Ease of installation and use

Installing loft ladders is a job that any competent DIY-er could carry out – if they had precise instructions. None of the models featured in our reviews, or the ones that we ruled out for that matter, had concise directions.

Before undertaking the installation, refer to the many online videos available to help along the way.

Loft ladder companies ensure operation of their ladders is as straightforward as possible. Choose a brand with a smooth opening mechanism that doesn’t require too much weight-bearing or effort.

Materials

Aluminium keeps the weight of ladders to a minimum whilst being strong, durable and looking contemporary .

Timber loft ladders have a classic style that doesn’t creak or ‘give’ beneath your feet. They feel warmer and are quieter to use. Wooden loft ladders tend to be more expensive than an equivalent metal model.

Safety and Comfort

Handrails are one of the best safety features for anyone unused to working at height.

Many ladders have rubber feet to aid surface grip, others have rubber steps to aid comfort and non-slip capabilities.

Adjustable length

Your chosen ladder needs to be a particular length to reach from the floor of the loft to the landing floor.

Some loft ladders extend further to reduce the climbing angle.

Space saving

Compact loft ladders cost a fraction of the price of installing a staircase and take up little or no space.

The most compact models require very limited space within the loft, giving the user maximum storage space.

Types of Loft Ladder

  • Telescopic loft ladders are ideally suited to small spaces as the retract within them selves and store within the confines of the loft hatch or ceiling. They are lightweight and easy to use.
  • Concertina loft ladders, sometimes known as zig-zag ladders, are great space savers and easy to extend and retract. They require minimum vertical clearance; they are durable and rigid.
  • Folding loft ladders often require no storage space as they attach to the inside of the hatch door. They require more landing space to open out than other types but have less moving parts to fail. They are easy and quiet to use.
  • Portable loft ladders are convenient and versatile. They have many indoor and outdoor uses and most collapse to manageable, portable sizes. Storage is easy, their main sticking point is the need to carried from downstairs, the garage, shed, each time you need to access the loft space.

Final thoughts

It is imperative that you measure your available loft access precisely. Failure to do so could result in expensive alterations.

We recommend enlisting the help of a friend when attempting installation, and referring to online guides and videos for help.

When it is installed and you can nip up and down the loft with very little effort, ypu might wonder why you didn’t invest in the best loft ladder sooner.

Ever find yourself at the top of a ladder trying to hold more than one tool and trying to keep your balance?

I have created a list of of the top ladder accessories that will make you think, ‘ahhh.. why didn’t I get one of these sooner?’

Ladder Mat Anti Slip Rubber Safety MatLadderMat Ladder Leveller Anti Slip Rubber Safety Mat ideal for Window Cleaners

This kit is perfect for tradesmen, window cleaners for example, or even the odd DIY job around the house.

The mats provide a perfect level surface and grip for working anywhere and on any surface.

(Even if you’re outside on uneven terrain or inside on a slippy tiled surface.)

These mats are specially useful when you’re using a ladder on your own.

Ideally you should always have someone standing at the bottom of the ladder to support it.

However, if this is not an option, then these mats are a reassuring alternative to having no grip or security.

They can be used on any surface and doesn’t take up much room so can be taken anywhere in your car or van.

This anti slip ladder mat is perfect for use indoors, on wooden or tiled floors, which are renowned for having very little grip. The rubber will help the ladder to stay put and to avoid the ladder feet leaving a mark on the flooring.

See the price of the anti slip rubber mat on Amazon.

Universal Step Platform / Utility ShelfUniversal Step Platform/Utility Shelf For Multi Ladders

This is such a useful gadget.

How many times do you find yourself balancing on one rung of your ladder for long periods of time whilst decorating or working.

This platform works with any rung ladder and means you can relax your calves a little by not having to stand solely on the balls of your feet on the ladder rung.

The platform creates a sturdy surface to stand on – giving you more balance and less body tension overall.

It also doubles as a useful shelf!

It looks like it would be little it awkward to use, probably best to watch a video on how to use this ladder platform being trying to use it.

See the price of this ladder platform on Ebay

Draper Ladder Rack BracketsDraper 24808 Universal Step Wall Ladder Rack Brackets Security / Securing Lock

Neat and strong little brackets to store your ladder off the ground. Inexpensive but very high quality.

They can be applied to almost any way type (or wooden wall if you want to put them up in a shed.)

The pack contains two brackets – which are perfect for storing an average extendable ladder of 2-5 metres.

The brackets are quite deep, so even if you have a double ladder or even triple ladder, it will fit onto the brackets.

There are a tonne of different makes and models of ladder brackets, these are the ones I bought, after reading a lot of reviews to decide which would be the best ladder brackets for the least amount of money.

See the price of the Draper ladder brackets on Amazon.

LadderLimb – Hook to Hang Tools or Paint BucketsLadderLimb Safety First With The Ladder Limb Paint Pot Bucket Hook 10KG - 10001

A nifty and useful little gadget that every serious DIY enthusiast and tradesman needs.

It can hold up to 10KG in weight so its perfect for hooking a large tin of paint or paint caddy onto.

This will save you multiple trips up and down the ladder or having to balance with a tray in one hand.

It is also perfect for hooking heavy tools onto in between uses. – Like drills or hammers.

Once I got one of these ladder hooks I thought, why didn’t I ever get one before.

The ladder limb pictured provides a strong hook to hang things from, however there are lots of other accessories that can be adapted from a ladder limb to assist you when working on a ladder.

See the price of the LadderLimb on Amazon.

Henchman Tripod Ladder Protective Rubber Foot – Pack of 3

Henchman Tripod Ladder Protective Rubber Foot - Pack of 3

Specifically designed for the Henchman tripod ladder.

(A ladder to use for trimming hedges or trees, or even fruit picking).

Quite often, protective rubber feet are not included with the ladder and are usually cheaper to buy separately than in a combined price with the ladder.

The link below above takes you to a pack of three ladder feet.

These feet may not be suitable for other types of ladders as the space in the foot for the ladder to sit is a circle. (The shape of the feet on tripod ladders.)

If your tripod ladder is only ever used on the grass then you will probably not need these ladder feet. However, if you plant to use the tripod ladder on any other surface such as concrete, slabs, decking or tiles, you will definitely need to protect the floor from the pointed spike feet of the ladder (which are used to grip.)

See the price for the Henchman ladder feet on Ebay.
